Hi my lovelies! I wanted to focus today’s post on traditions and all the things that are important to us about the home. Something that I think so many of us have in common this year is the fact that we have spent a lot more time at home. Whether you celebrate Christmas or not I’ve always felt like December is a time for reflection, a time to slow down and to truly come together as a family.
I have always loved traditions – my parents put a lot of emphasis on this growing up and I think what is so wonderful is that as a family you can continue your childhood traditions but also create new ones. For example we have started celebrating Thanksgiving which I never did as a child but I think having a day to focus on what we are thankful for in our lives is just so lovely and a good way to reset your mind. A lot of my childhood traditions were focused around cooking – making traditional Finnish Karelian pies and Joulutorttu (I should do some stories on these because I am obsessed!) We would also make lots of crafts together with my mother at home, decorate the tree, go to church and I remember our home always being decorated so beautifully. I would love to know what are some of your favourite traditions?
So what do I love about this time of year now that I am older and have my own children? I love the cooking and the baking. I love making advent calendars for my girls. I love Christmas music – I start playing it in my car in late November and literally never get bored of it. I love making our home feel festive and decorating the tree of course. I love filling our home with candles and lights. I love wrapping presents. And I just love how this time of year brings family and friends close together – albeit in a somewhat different way this year. (December this year really makes me realise how full of change 2020 has been – I miss the freedom of being able to do such simple things as hug my loved ones!) I also love the warm drinks – hot chocolate and gloggi (mulled wine.) And of COURSE I love the fabulous clothes.
I think this year most of us do look forward more than ever to throwing on a beautiful frock and my NET-A-PORTER wishlist is filled with the most amazing dresses.
